Lyrics

Kids called last night
Asked when we’d be home
Tell them not to wait up
Packed the truck with a picnic and a quilt
And that old suitcase with the broken lock
Left a note on the kitchen table
Signed it with a heart, and we didn’t stop
The town said slow down, take it easy now
Sit on the porch and watch the world go by
We said thank you kindly, it’s a lovely thought
But we’ve got somewhere to be tonight
So if the phone rings, let it ring
We’re out where the crickets sing
Don’t wait up, don’t wait up
We’re taking the long way home
Windows down and the radio on
Don’t wait up, don’t wait up
We’ll be back when the fun runs out, honey
And honey, it never runs out
Don’t wait up
We stopped for pie in a town with no name
Danced in the lot where the jukebox played
A trucker tipped his hat and said
I hope I’m half as lucky at your age
These knees may creak like the old barn door
We take the stairs a little slow
But a body that’s been loved this long
Still knows exactly where to go
So if the phone rings, let it ring
We’re out where the crickets sing
Don’t wait up, don’t wait up
We’re taking the long way home
Windows down and the radio on
Don’t wait up, don’t wait up
We’ll be back when the fun runs out, honey
And honey, it never runs out
Don’t wait up
We waited up for you
Through every fever, every storm
Left the door unlocked for years
Kept the supper warm
Now it’s our turn
The road is long and the map is old
And we don’t need to know the end
Just your hand inside of mine
And one more bend
Don’t wait up, don’t wait up
We’re taking the long way home
Windows down and the radio on
Don’t wait up, don’t wait up
We’ll be back when the fun runs out, honey
And honey, it never runs out
Don’t wait up
Don’t wait up, don’t wait up
Don’t wait up, we’re still in season
Don’t wait up
Where are we going
Does it matter
Don’t wait up
